Researchers get a boost from Asthma Foundation WA 

Last night the Asthma Foundation WA (AFWA) awarded $107,500 to four successful grant recipients, at their annual Research Grant Awards evening held at Tompkins on Swan Function Centre. The evening cocktail function was attended by grant recipient finalists, previous grant winners, corporate partners of AFWA, as well as their board members and staff. The guest speaker for the event was Professor Mark Everard – McCusker Foundation Chair in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine / The University of Western Australia.

In addition to the above recipients, Asthma Australia has awarded one of its 2016 PhD Scholarships to a WA researcher based at Telethon Kids Institute - Niamh TROY with A/Prof Anthony BOSCO supervising.  Niamh was at the event to receive her national scholarship for the grant topic: Discovering the immune-inflammatory gene networks underlying the epithelial response to human rhinovirus in children with asthma

 Project Title: Discovering the immune-inflammatory gene networks underlying the epithelial response to human rhinovirus in children with asthma

 

    One of the main roles of AFWA and Asthma Australia is to fund vital research on asthma and to date the not-for-profit community organisation has contributed over $5million to respiratory research. All grant applications are reviewed by AFWA Medical and Scientific Advisory Committee (MASAC) whose members include clinicians, researchers and physicians namely Professor Graham Hall (Chairman), Professor Peter Henry, Winthrop Professor Mark Everard, Associate Professor Svetlana Baltic, Professor Deirdre Coombe, Dr Li Ping Chung and Associate Professor Anthony Kicic.

    AFWA Executive Director Tony Carter said that:

    ‘It is an important role of the Foundation to fund these research teams, and to promote and support emerging respiratory researchers. We look forward to the outcomes of these grants and scholarships, and to sharing the results’.
