Evaluation of staff asthma training - Pilot Study
As previously reported, an evaluation of the Asthma Australia training for school staff by the University of Sydney Pharmacy Faculty found that our course contributes to staff understanding and knowledge of asthma. The evaluation went on to test a new element of scenario training in 19 primary schools in and around Sydney. It was found that presenting a scenario of an asthma attack and requiring staff to demonstrate their response, choosing the right asthma medication and devices from a selection, increased the skill level of staff to react appropriately and contributed significantly to the retention of these skills.
We are currently approaching schools across Australia in term 1 to be involved in a pilot study to develop practical delivery methods for scenario training. Participating schools will be contributing to our aim of providing the best possible training to prepare staff for that time when they have to manage an asthma attack (see the survey results article for the statistics on this). Staff involved will be required to take a knowledge test and partake in scenario training (10min) then retake the knowledge test and redo the scenario training after 5 weeks (a further 10min).
If your school would like to be involved, please contact us on 1800 ASTHMA (1800 278462) and ask to speak to the schools coordinator. We will share our results with you in the next newsletter.
