Asthma Emergency Kits

Asthma Emergency Kits (AEK) help make the management of an asthma attack easy for education staff and are particularly useful for off site excursions and sports events.  Kits are available from your local Asthma Foundation.  They include simple instructions for Asthma First Aid as well as the devices to administer medication.  To complete a purchased kit, reliever medication puffers need to be supplied by the school – these are available from your local pharmacy.  In some states a medical request is required to purchase puffers – these can be obtained from your local Asthma Foundation upon proof of current staff asthma training.

 It is vital that the reliever medication puffer is checked regularly to ensure it has not expired (see date on puffer device) and that there is still medication available (the medication log in the kit helps to monitor this).

 Usage of spacer devices in schools is required to be single person use, so replacement spacers are needed to top up the kit whenever one is used.  We advise that each kit should always contain two spacers to aid this process.  Once used, a spacer can either be provided to the student who used it, kept by the school and labeled for future use by that particular student (eg frequent user of school AEK), or disposed of properly.
