Thunderstorm asthma resource kits
A wide range of programs has been developed since last year’s thunderstorm asthma event to improve asthma management. In addition to the community education sessions hosted by Asthma Australia to raise awareness for better asthma and allergy management, the NAC produced a series of educational activities and new evidence-based resources for health professionals. Here’s a brief overview of these resources:
Evidence-based information paper on thunderstorm asthma
The NAC’sinformation paper explains the mechanism of thunderstorm asthma and provides guidance on how to identify and manage patients at risk of thunderstorm asthma. An important step is to ensure your patients’ asthma action plans are up to date.
Resource for pharmacists to identify and counsel patients
Pharmacists and pharmacy staff played a crucial role in emergency response during last year’s thunderstorm asthma, as they were often the first people to notice a person with breathing difficulties. The handy flowchart helps pharmacists to identify and advise at-risk patients.
Webinars and online learning modules
Members of RACGP, APNA and PSA can find the newly developed and evidence-based online learning modules on thunderstorm asthma in their professional organisations’ online learning platforms. Also, the recorded ACRRM thunderstorm asthma webinar can be viewed here.
