Will you be part of the search for a cure for asthma?

  • Research has revolutionised the lives of people with asthma.
  • But there is still no cure for this disease that affects over 2.5 million Australians.
  • Your gift can speed up the search for a cure...

Fifty years ago very little was known about asthma.  Some even believed asthma was the consequence of over-protective mothering.  Medical and scientific research has helped to dispel such myths and provide treatments which have dramatically improved the lives of people with asthma.

Our strength in Australia is that we have some of the world’s best researchers in asthma. Our weakness is a lack of funding. Other better known and better funded diseases are attracting bright young researchers away from asthma research, and this could have a potentially disastrous impact on the future of asthma research in our country. Our opportunity to correct this lies with you.

We need to continue breaking new ground in asthma research

While enormous breakthroughs have been made in the diagnosis and treatment of asthma, much remains to be done.

In the 1960s, very few drugs were available for the treatment of asthma and they had many unwanted side-effects. We have come along way since those days but we still need to find better drugs with fewer side effects.

Research is needed to focus on strategies to prevent asthma.  We need better ways to diagnose asthma earlier, and we need to encourage early intervention with treatment for those affected by the disease. We need to reduce the burden of asthma in our community in the most scientifically valid way possible.

We may have to wait a decade before we get the complete picture of asthma, but with your support, we will.

Your contribution will help secure the future of asthma research in Australia. The benefits of new knowledge created by this research will make the future so much brighter for people affected by asthma.
