Anaphylaxis Training Requirements

Ministerial Order 706 - Anaphylaxis Management in Victorian Schools outlines points that schools need to ensure are included in their Anaphylaxis Management Policy.

The Guidelines for Managing Anaphylaxis in all Victorian Schools are designed to support schools in developing and implementing a best practice School Anaphylaxis Management Policy. Anaphylaxis Training is only required where a child at risk of anaphylaxis is enrolled at the school.

 

Minimum Anaphylaxis Training Requirements

** It is recommended that all schools have a minimum of two qualified School Anaphylaxis Supervisors, regardless if there is a child at risk of anaphylaxis enrolled at the school

Accepted Courses:

1.1 22303VIC Course in  Verifying the Correct Use of Adrenaline Autoinjector Devices

The Department of Education and Training has listed The Asthma Foundation of Victoria as it's preferred provider for the short course 22303VIC Course in Verifying the Correct Use of Adrenaline Autoinjector Devices in Government Schools. This funded training will be available from from January 2016 until March 2017. All Government Schools in Victoria will be able to have two (2) staff members trained through the funding arrangement.

1.2 ASCIA e-training for Victorian Schools

Under this model it is recommended that all Victorian school staff undertake the new Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy (ASCIA) e-training course and have their competency in using an autoinjector tested in person within 30 days of completing the course.

The online ASCIA e-training course is fully funded for all Victorian school staff.  The course will take approximately one hour and can be accessed from the ASCIA site at: anaphylaxis etraining: schools victoria 

2. 10710NAT Course in Allergy and Anaphylaxis Awareness

This course is specifically designed to provide knowledge and skills in the recognition and management of anaphylaxis, risk assessment, risk minimisation and Anaphylaxis First Aid procedures.

This is a nationally recognised training course and the qualifications are valid for 3 years. Upon successful completion, the attendee will receive a Statement of Attainment.

OR

22300VIC Course in First Aid Management of Anaphylaxis

This course is provided by St John's Ambulance free for government schools until 30/06/2016, and then paid for by each school thereafter. Schools may also elect to pay for this course through any RTO that has 22300VIC in their scope of practice. This training is valid for 3 years.

Note:

In addition to the above training, all schools with a child or young person at risk of an anaphylactic reaction enrolled are required to undertake twice-yearly briefings on anaphylaxis management under Ministerial Order 706.

The briefings are to be conducted using the Anaphylaxis Management Briefing Presentation developed by the Department of Education and Training, by a staff member at the school who has completed one of the above training options in the last two years. A facilitators guide and speakers notes have also been developed.
